Welcome to Geography Without Sight.
The site is currently under construction please use the Contact page if you have any questions.
This site is intended as resource for educators trying to convey the concepts of Geography to students with disabilities, primarily with limitations of vision. Blind and Visually Impaired (BVI) individuals are often marginalized by the traditional methods of geographic education that rely heavily on visual representations of space and geographic phenomena. BVI individuals are fully capable of understanding large scale earth system processes, however educators often lack the resources to convey geographic concepts without the traditional use of imagery. The purpose of this site is to share my experiences, the materials I have developed with the help of several other people, and links to useful materials available from many other sources so that other educators can more quickly incorporate BVI students fully into their classrooms.
Though geography is a broad subject, this site currently will focus on physical geography at the introductory college course level. Though the original intention of this work was to help a blind student learn physical geography, I have found myself using many these methods more frequently to engage every student with more of their senses often resulting in better material comprehension. Please explore this site as a resource to help you understand and convey geographic concepts to individuals who may be struggling with the material regardless of disability.
